Bright Dog Red Returns to O+ Poughkeepsie

Bright Dog Red returns to play a set at the Second Annual O+ Poughkeepsie Festival. This appearance marks the band’s third appearance at an O+ Festival, having played the O+ Festival Kingston in 2016 and the inaugural O+ Festival Poughkeepsie in 2017.

BDR will perform at Darkside Records, one of the Hudson Valley’s premier locations for music, memorabilia, and entertainment, at 7:30 PM on the opening night of the Festival, an uplifting, community minded event.

The non-profit O+ Festival (pronounced O-Positive) re-envisions community wellness by connecting musicians, artists and health & wellness providers to build a more sustainable solution to community well-being. The Festival exchanges the art of medicine for the medicine of art. O+ Festivals grow neighborhood by neighborhood, forming stronger communities and improving health. Bright Dog Red will return to nublu April 27, 2018 at 10:00 PM. The band will be featured in the venue’s “classic” space, located at 62 Avenue C on New York’s Lower East Side. This mark’s the group’s second engagement at the venue. Nublu Classic hosts two performance spaces and a studio that feature an international array of jazz, world, electronic, and improvised music. Bright Dog Red to release Album on Ropeadope Records

March 19, 2018: Bright Dog Red (BDR), an improvising collective from Albany, New York, has signed on to release an album with Ropeadope, a Philadelphia based record label. The band’s first full-length album, “Means to the Ends,” is due out October 5, 2018.

Ropeadope, long at the nexus of jazz, hip hop, and electronica, seems a natural home for BDR’s singular fusion of free improvisation, electronica, jazz, hip hop, psychedelia, and noise music. Ropeadope’s extensive roster includes releases from DJ Logic, Snarky Puppy, Christian McBride, Charlie Hunter, Christian Scott, and Eddie Palmieri, among others.

BDR first debuted in late 2015. In some three short years, the band’s regular plays at New York jazz venues ShapeShifter Lab, Spectrum, and Nublu Classic have generated comparisons to ” Mahavishnu Orchestra meets Digable Planets” (Paul Schulman), “electronic Ahmad Jamal,” (Don Lucoff) and to other psychedelic, jazz fusion, and hip hop luminaries.

BDR has a rapidly growing following, having played regularly in New York, the Hudson Valley, and Boston. Those dates include opening for George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, sharing bills with hip hop sensation Decora, jazz rock trio Italian Surf Academy, pianist Zack Clarke, and multi-instrumentalist Morgan Guerin, regularly headlining Spectrum NYC, regularly playing ShapeShifter Lab, performing at nublu, performing at the Berklee College of Music, headlining Albany’s Madison Theatre twice, playing BSP Lounge in Kingston, NY, playing Lilypad at Inman in Cambridge, playing Olive’s in Nyack (4 times). and appearing at the O+ Festivals in Kingston and Poughkeepsie.

Bright Dog Red returns to Brooklyn’s Spectrum

Spectrum NYC has announced that Bright Dog Red will return as part of a programming series launched earlier in the year. The series, dubbed “Club Disorder (Spectrum Underground),” was created to incubate an avant rock, underground music scene at the venue’s new Brooklyn location.  BDR plays between 8:00 and 9:30 PM. Admission, $15.

BDR has a long history at the venue, a leading destination for creative, improvised, new music. The band served as the inaugural act for the “Club Disorder” series when it launched in July of 2017. In January of 2016, BDR kicked off another Spectrum series, “Friday Night Prog,” at the venue’s former location on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Spectrum is a technology-intensive music/performance venue and art gallery.  Its mission is (1) to support innovation and virtuosity in the arts and (2) to foster conversation around ideas, culture and current social / political issues. Spectrum is located at 70 Flushing Avenue, Garage A, in Brooklyn, NY, across from the Brooklyn Navy Yards.

Bright Dog Red returns to Brooklyn’s ShapeShifter Lab

Bright Dog Red (BDR) returns to Brooklyn’s ShapeShifter Lab, October 29, 2017, 8:15 PM.

BDR’s set will feature guest soloist Morgan Guerin, saxophones, for an evening of what England’s Emerging Indie Bands describes as “extemporised psychedelic jazz-hop.”

Since debuting in 2015, BDR has generated comparisons to “Mahavishnu Orchestra meets Digable Planets” (Paul Schulman) and to “Electric Ahmad Jamal” (Don Lucoff). ShapeShifter Lab, “a vital part of the city’s jazz ecosystem,” according to the New York Times, played no small role in BDR’s development, presenting the band in early 2016.

BDR’s return is produced by ShapeShifter + (Plus), a non profit organization that exists “to support, inspire and foster the development of improvised/composed forms of music, dance, theatre and visual arts by way of presenting the most cutting edge and forward thinking artists of our time.”

Bright Dog Red returns home to Albany’s Madison Theater

After a string of high profile dates in New York City, the Hudson Valley, and Boston, Bright Dog Red returns home to headline Albany’s historic Madison Theater, an old style movie house turned community arts center. This date marks the band’s second engagement a the iconic venue. A hub of the Madison Avenue neighborhood, the Theater offers a variety of films, dynamic live music performances, community events, and “the best organic popcorn this side of the Hudson.”

BDR will be joined by special guests Apostrophe S, an Albany based beat producer, composer, and electronic musician.
